Best Free Image Converters

By John Nader · Updated June 27, 2026

Most image conversions are routine — PNG to JPG, anything to WebP — and almost any tool handles them. The free converters separate on the edges: rare or exotic formats like HEIC and TIFF, daily caps, batch limits, and whether your file is uploaded at all. We tested six popular free converters to map which one to reach for when.

How we tested

We converted the same three files — a HEIC photo, a transparent PNG and a multi-page TIFF — in each tool, recording the supported format breadth, the free-tier size and daily caps, batch limits, and whether conversion happened on a server or in the browser. We also checked that transparency and colour survived the round-trip.

What we found in testing

For the everyday PNG and HEIC conversions, every tool produced a clean result and the differences were trivial. The exotic TIFF and rare-format work is where the specialist services pulled ahead: CloudConvert and Convertio handled formats the lighter tools simply didn't list, at the cost of a daily quota (CloudConvert capped us after about 25 conversions). Squoosh again kept the photo entirely in the browser. For a quick batch of common formats with no account and no cap, our own converter and iLoveIMG were the fastest path.

Our verdict

Match the tool to the format. For exotic or rare formats and the widest breadth, CloudConvert or Convertio are worth the daily quota — they convert things the others won't. For privacy on a sensitive image, Squoosh keeps everything in your browser. Where our own Image Converter wins is the common case: a quick, no-signup, no-cap conversion between PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF. We'll send you to CloudConvert without hesitation when you hand us a format we don't support.

Frequently asked questions

Which free image converter supports the most formats?

CloudConvert and Convertio have the widest format support, including exotic and rare types, at the cost of a daily free quota. For common web formats, lighter no-cap tools like ours are quicker.

Is there a converter that does not upload my image?

Squoosh converts between web image formats entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. The others, including ours, upload the file but process it without storing it.

When should I use a heavyweight converter over a simple one?

Reach for CloudConvert or Convertio when you have an exotic format (HEIC, RAW, multi-page TIFF) or need an API and large files. For routine PNG/JPG/WebP work, a no-signup no-cap tool is faster.

Do free image converters cap how much I can convert?

Many do — CloudConvert limits free use to roughly 25 conversions a day, Convertio limits daily minutes. Our converter and Squoosh have no daily task cap.
